Late ’72 Built Porsche 914 Project

Found here on The Samba is an early ’73 914 Project.

Originally painted Olympic Blue (L51P) this 914 has been resprayed red at some point in time. The original 1.7l remains although the fuel injection has been swapped for a single Weber. The motor spins freely however we haven’t tried to start it. The preferable side shift transmission is present and engages in all 5 gears + reverse. The interior is fair but will need some work. The rockers and floors are sound less one rust hole at the back passenger side. The hell hole has rust that has been painted over by a previous owner and the battery mount moved to the rear trunk. Assume that this area will need more work. All in all this is a good project or a great complete parts car for your other 914. We have several other parts available if interested. $1950 or best offer. Feel free to email with questions or to come see it. The 914 is in Athens, GA. Sold as is with a bill of sale only. Buy these up before they head north along with the other early Porsches.

Georgia Mountains Barn Find: 1958 Triumph TR3A

1958 TR3 eBay Auction

Up for auction is a 1958 Triumph TR3A that we found tucked away in the mountains of North Georgia. While it has been off the road for quite some time most of the parts are present to start a full restoration. The interior is remarkably intact with a complete set of Jaeger gauges, all pull and push knobs with the starter key, original banjo steering wheel with ignition adjusting horn button and original seats and sill leather. The wooden floor boards are still intact as is the carpet padding.

The original convertible top frame is straight and in working condition as are the side skirt frames. The windshield frame is in great shape with very little pitting in the chrome although the driver’s side mount it missing. What we believe is the original 2.0 liter four cylinder engine is all there and is not seized. We have not tried to start it as it will likely need a complete rebuild. See below for the engine and body numbers. Also present are what seem to be the original twin side-draft carburetors with linkage. The transmission is intact and engages into all four gears and the fuel tank is complete without any major rust holes.
The body is intact although in need of plenty of work. More importantly the frame is solid and not rusted through. Make no mistake, this TR3 will need a complete restoration but for someone that wants to build a vintage Triumph roadster to their specifications this will make a great starting point.
See our eBay store (http://r.ebay.com/lgP8sc) for auctions of additional TR3 parts plus this car’s sister 1958 frame and body.

Cousin to the 914: ’74 VW Type IV in Texas

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1560393

In the late 60’s Volkswagen was putting the finishing touches on the follow up to the Type 3 or Fastback, Squareback and Notchback series. The Type 4 had a flat four similar to that of the previous generation but it was a bit larger at 1.7 liters and featured Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection.

At the same time Heinz Nordhoff, who was at the helm of VW, wanted a replacement for the Karmann Ghia and Ferdinand Piëch at Porsche wanted a less expensive replacement for the 912. The result was the 914 which would be sold jointly by the two companies. The Porsche version would carry a 2.0 liter flat six and the VW version would use the 1.7 liter four from the Type 4. Unfortunately Nordhoff passed away in 1968 before the first 914 hit the road. Kurt Lotz was his replacement at Volkswagen but without a personal relationship with the Porsche family the deal soon fell apart. Lotz drove VW to front engined, water-cooled cars and the VW 914 was doomed.

This Type IV 412 was the last year of the breed and is on The Samba in Lewisville, Texas for a very reasonable $2500. It shows some wear and the seller claims that a faulty fuel pump is keeping it from running. All else looks very honest with this car and it may even still wear its original gold paint job. The plethora of 914 engine parts available mean that you could really make this a sleeper.

Getting harder to find: 1966 Porsche 912 Project

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/cto/4293905991.html

This ’66 912 looks rough but complete. We found it above on Criagslist in Pascagoula, Mississippi which is down near the Gulf of Mexico. Gulf air isn’t doing the rust on the body any favors but the car wears California Blue plates so hopefully its not critical. The ad only says best offer so someone please rescue this one!

Project of the week: ’52 MG TD in a box

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/eat/cto/4271711356.html

We came across this project ’52 MG TD in Stone Mountain, GA just outside Atlanta. The seller claims that it has been apart and sitting for four years but it does look like all the major pieces are there. While it would take some work to reassemble if you could get this for a bit under the asking price of $5000 it could prove to be a good find.

’72 BMW 2002 Shell

Clint from Maryville, TN who’s a friend of the shop has this ’02 body up for sale. The rear shock towers, floors and rockers are said to be very sound. Use this shell in place of a rusty square taillight ’02 or start from scratch to build a vintage rally or track car. Asking price is $750 or best offer. Reply to this post if you’re interested.

Old-school project: 1930’s DKW Barnfind

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/mcy/4231321090.html

We found this DKW project on Atlanta’s Craigslist. The owner claims that the original frame was converted to a soft-tail in the 50’s and that there are two engines included in the sale. There aren’t any pictures in the listing nor is there a price but if we get a reply we’ll post up what we get. Plan on this one being a full project as it hasn’t run since the early 60’s. The picture above is what they looked like new.
