Time Capsule 1977 Mercedes-Benz 300d in Athens, GA

Find it here on Craigslist

Up for sale is an extremely original and unmolested 1977 Mercedes-Benz 300D. This w123 chassis was completed in February of ’77 and picked up in Stuttgart by a couple from Atlanta, GA that took European delivery. The first service was performed in Luzern, Switzerland on March 11th and it was returned to the United States on March 16th of ’77. Since then the 300D has covered less than 143,000 miles (roughly 3,800 miles per year). The Mercedes has always lived in the Atlanta area and is free of any rust or corrosion.

The interior is in near pristine condition. The only wear is a small tear on the driver’s seat and some slight staining on the rear bench (see pictures). The dashboard and wood trim are in great shape as the car was stored inside most of its life. The original Becker Europa am/fm radio remains however it will need a new plug to mate to wiring that was altered in favor of a newer unit at sometime in the past. Even the original Mercedes-Benz First Aid kit is complete and still intact. Outside the 300D wears its original Classic White paint which shows slight cracking for a nice patina. The driver’s side doors have had scratches touched up with what appears to be white spray paint and thus does not shine like the rest of the car. This can only be seen while looking at the car from the front or rear 3/4 angle.

Mechanically, the 300D is in fantastic shape. The 3.0 liter, 5-cylinder Diesel engine performs flawlessly and pulls strong. The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts up and down smoothly with no hesitation or over-run. The suspension bushings are in fantastic shape and it wears new Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach springs. The front brake calipers were rebuilt recently and new rear sway bar linkages were added. With proper maintenance these engines will run for half a million miles or more so there is plenty of life left in this one. The A/C system has not been converted to R134 and needs a charge. All of the lights function properly. The four Michelin 14″ tires are in great shape with plenty of life remaining. Along with the original import documentation there are service receipts dating from 2006.
